Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Most replacement windows handles made of upvc come with everything you require. However, if your old handle was secured by screws or pins, they will need to removed. Take off the «snap-in» cover at the base of the handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a set of multipoint locks that are designed to fit on casement windows such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into an internal gearbox that is mounted on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it triggers a series of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles and provide more security than the typical single point lock that is found on older frames.

You'll need to measure the size of the spindle from base of your uPVC handle if you wish to purchase the right replacement handles for upvc windows. This measurement is referred to as step height. It will aid you in finding the perfect uPVC handle for your home.

It is possible to remove any screws which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if that's the case, use a screwdriver to remove these or pliers to remove the pins that hold the handle. Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminium windows. The handle is closed and then turns into a wedge-shaped receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in a variety of nose heights that can be adjusted to the frame.

The handle locks using the thin spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a plastic wedge which is attached to the frame. These are usually single-way handles, but a deadlock with a locking mechanism is a possibility to add additional security.

The replacement cockspur handles are also easy to put in. All you require is the correct backset as well as a new set (supplied). The backset is the distance from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. In general Aluminium window frames tend to have a backset of 9mm, whereas UPVC uses 21mm. The spindle or, in certain instances the entire handle assembly is removed by unwinding the handle. The new handle is screwed in place using a pair pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw comes in a brass or zinc finish to match existing hardware. There is also a choice for a self-locking pozidriv screw.

Turn and tilt

Tilt and turn windows are a popular European window design that has been in use for decades in Europe however, it is only just starting to catch on stateside. They combine the benefits of three different window styles: tilt, in-swing and pivot. They are ideal for older homes since they offer more airflow than standard windows.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they are locked like any other fixed window. By turning the handle 90or 180 degrees, depending on the type of tilt-and-turn window the sash opens inwards and the window tilts inwards to allow air circulation. This is a great option to allow ventilation without having to open a large windows, which could pose a security risk if not properly secured when opening.

If the handle is turned 90@ or 180@ the sash can be fully opened, much like a door. This allows complete air circulation, which is particularly beneficial in rooms with a lot of draft or homes where odors from smoke or other sources are likely to accumulate. It also makes cleaning the exterior of the glass much easier since it can be done from inside the house — a task that often requires ladders that are not safe.

Tilt and turn windows are very secure. When locked in a closed position, they are difficult to open from outside, and they come with double seals to prevent rainwater from entering the house when in the tilted or in-swing position. This feature is particularly useful for older homes, where burglars tend to target windows which can be opened using side hinges.

Spade

There are several different types of handles that can be installed on windows with double-glazed upvc. There are two primary types of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other options include tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, monkey tail handles, and various other types. The kind of handle you pick will depend on your preference and the kind of windows you have.
